I never thought Gymnastics could be so riviting. Yet here I am, glued to a 1.8" handheld screen, wondering how the hell you get to the point where you can hold your body upright from a pair of stationary rings in midair. fux.

Marty, it's all your fault. After you mentioned it, I couldn't stop thinking about Burning Man. It fell at a perfect time in our release schedule at work, because I would have about a week at the end of the month with not much to do before we start up again. I was thinking about how it's summer and I haven't been out to enjoy much of it at all. I thought about how I've been way too normal this year, and how much I need to get weird. So I I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for time off, and I what do you know, I got it.

So it's official, I am going back to Burning Man. I found a ticket at a relatively decent price, I ordered about a weeks worth of Tasty Bite, and I need to buy a new tent (I somehow lost the old one), but I am already really looking forward to it. At the least, I need a week off. At the most, I need a push to help me get out of the corporate lifestyle. Either way, I am going back to Burning Man again, happy.

I am playing Doom 3 and it is scaring the shit out of me. It's running surprising well at the medium settings, 1024x768. Looks like the Geforce4 4800 will last me for a bit longer.

Man, I so can't wait for some good multiplayer mods to come out for this.

It's summertime of 2004, and you know what that means. The olympics are almost upon us, and it's seriously making me consider buying a television, or at least a TV tuner card of some sort. Not that I am huge olympics geek or anything, but one of my favorite things about the games are the history making moments that you don't expect. Like in 2000, my fondest memory was of just happening to walk into the livingroom when Rulon Gardner started his match against the largest man I have ever seen in my life, Alexander Karelin, who just happened to be the 3-time undefeated world champion of Greco-Roman wrestling. This is an event that I never would have scheduled the time to watch, and no one expected it to be a match of note, except that this freshman farm boy from Wyoming just happened to be the one to finally break Karelin's winning streak, and just barely. I just remember thinking how nuts it was that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see that go down. The spontaneous energy of seeing something like that makes it worthwhile for me.

Anyway, I am about 21/2 years into my non-TV watching regimin, and I am wary of making a purchase that might push me over the line. As of now, I really only need to find a good BitTorrent tracker in order to enjoy the few shows that I really would want to watch on TV, and this keeps me out of the channel surfing beartrap. So, I was wondering if I could really expect to see any olympic trackers out there this year. I'm sure that other countries with less stringent copyright enforcement could foster something like this, but really, why couldn't it be done legally for profit? I know it's too late for this year, but for any really popular event, couldn't some agency licence the rights to distribute the broadcast online, and sell commercial time on the video? People could easily fast forward through the commercial time, but anyone with a PVR can do that these days. Let it go as far and wide as the web can take it, farther the better for advertisers, and BitTorrent would only make it cheaper for it to get out there. My only problem then would be avoiding regular news in order to not spoil any surprises.

Daaaaaamn, some comment spammer hit monkeyfarts last night with 500+ comments hawking mpeg2 decoders and adult dvds. Thankfully, he used the same email address for all of them, so it was simple to clear out vis mysql, but now dreamhost's server seems to be crapping out on regenerating all the individual pages again, so I think the comments are going to be fubar there for a while.

I was thinking about converting to MT again, but this kind of illustrates the problems that server-side scripts have. Wordpress seems like it would be better, since it doesn't generate static pages, but I wonder if it would bring mysql to it's knees with constant queries. That, and it doesn't really seem like it's ready for primetime yet, since out of the box is requires (or required, last time I checked) quite a bit of hacking around to get it right.

Odd to say, but keeping everything on Google's servers for now with blogger seems like it has its advantages. I just wish it had some more advanced features, since it was significantly dummbed down for the redesign, even with new features added. But, free is free, I guess.

Holy crap. Yahoo finally has gone ahead with their upgrade to 100mb of mail storage for all normal users, but since I am a YahooSBC DSL subscriber, I got 2GB of mail storage, plus no more graphical ads. I was considering moving all my personal correspondence to Gmail just for storage, but I have to admit, this kind of changes things a little bit. 2GB. I wonder if this will spark another round of dot-com style free service bonanzas?

Did you know that Lex Luthor is the POTUS in the current Superman Comics? Considering the political climate in the U.S. today, that is *outstanding*.
